Pew: Left-Leaning Influencers Join Bluesky But Stay On X

It’s no surprise that many prominent left-leaning social media accounts have recently embraced Bluesky — and a new analysis from the Pew Research Center aims to quantify the shift.
This analysis updates Pew’s November 2024 news influencer report, which had not accounted for Bluesky at the time. The study examined a select group of 500 influencers, each with over 100,000 followers on at least one major platform and a consistent focus on current events.
Pew Finds Nearly Half of Top Influencers Have Joined Bluesky Since 2024 Election
For this Bluesky-focused update, Pew analyzed the same group of influencers—rather than accounts that gained large followings exclusively on Bluesky—and found that by February/March, 43% had joined the platform. Over half (51%) of those accounts were created after the 2024 presidential election.
The data shows a clear partisan split: 69% of left-leaning influencers—those who identified as liberals or Democrats and supported Kamala Harris or Joe Biden before the election—had joined Bluesky, compared to just 15% of conservative influencers.
This shift hasn’t necessarily come at the cost of X (formerly Twitter). Although Elon Musk’s alignment with now-President Donald Trump may have encouraged some users to explore Bluesky, 82% of the influencers Pew tracked still maintained accounts on X—only a slight drop from 85% in summer 2025.
In short, while many left-leaning influencers are exploring Bluesky, the majority (87%) haven’t left X. Pew also found that most influencers still post more frequently on X than on Bluesky.
That said, Bluesky engagement is growing — the share of influencers actively posting on the platform rose from 54% in early January to 66% by late March.
