Scientists Create Anti-COVID Spray with 24-Hour Effectiveness
Even as offices keep expanding capacities as the danger of COVID-19 diminishes, occupants will still expect a particular standard when guaranteeing surfaces are not infected. In an effort to assist frontline cleaning teams with touchpoint disinfection, researchers from the University of Queensland’s School of Engineering are striving to create a spray capable of eliminating pathogens, including E. Coli, staphylococcus aureus, and COVID-19 for 24 hrs.
Anti-COVID spray
In a recent report from Food Processing, the research group led by Dr. Heather Shewan developed a spray capable of doing that. By utilizing a protein called hydrolyzed gelatin, the spray is composed of a thin film that allows the disinfectant to adhere to surfaces for a minimum of 24 hours, stopping pathogens from harboring on the marked area. This lifespan for the disinfectant lasts longer than typical commercial cleaners, making it ideal for several facilities, including hotels, offices, retail, and especially food service businesses.
The research group was assisted by GELITA Australia, who provided the protein, and OzKleen, an Australian cleaning manufacturer. A microbiologist, Dr. Deirdre Mikkelsen, and virologist, Dr. Kirsty Short, were additionally on the group to help with any infection-related expertise. The project was financed with a $90,000 grant courtesy of an Advance Queensland Industry Fellowship give.
In screening trials, the spray was placed on glass and let to dry fully. Twenty-four hours later, the COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2) was added to the same glass, but after testing, it revealed that the virus had not been able to survive. Similar tests were carried out on stainless steel, and even after water was rinsed on the previously applied spray spots, very few traces of the virus could survive.
If green-lighted, OzKleen noted that the spray would certainly be produced in Queensland with the possibility of global expansion.
