The Adaptev Headlamp Auto-adjusts its Beam to Your Head Movement.
Typically, headlamp users must manually adjust their device’s angle to suit their activities. However, the Adaptev Headlamp is different—it automatically adapts its beam angle to the wearer’s head movements.
This innovative headlamp, currently featured in a Kickstarter campaign, is crafted by Panther Vision, a Chicago-based startup. It integrates an IMU (inertial measurement unit) and five sets of LEDs to independently direct light to the left, right, upward, downward, and straight ahead.
IMU-Powered Adaptive Illumination
The IMU detects the user’s head movements and modulates the headlamp’s illumination accordingly. For instance, when the user turns their head left or right, the corresponding beam activates, and it turns off once the movement stops. The forward-facing beam remains constant. Similarly, when the user looks up or down, the respective beams activate to provide better lighting for the direction of their gaze. This functionality is reminiscent of what we observed in the Hydra 3 Bike Light, where left- or right-facing beams adjusted as the cyclist steered in those directions.
The concept behind the Adaptev is to offer additional light when necessary without depleting the battery excessively or causing excessive glare by constantly running at maximum brightness. However, users have the option to select a non-adaptive “All On” mode or a “Center Only” mode if they prefer.
Furthermore, the headlamp provides three intensity settings, with the highest one delivering an output of 860 lumens when in “All On” mode. In Adaptive mode, users can also pick from three different sensitivity settings for head movement detection.
Battery Life, Lightweight Design, and Waterproof Durability
Reported battery life spans from 45 minutes when using “All On” at high intensity, up to 14 hours when set to “Center Only” with low intensity. The entire unit is said to weigh 96 grams (3.4 oz) and boasts an IP67 waterproof rating, allowing it to endure submersion at depths of 1 meter (3.3 ft) for a minimum of 30 minutes.
If the Adaptev Headlamp successfully goes into production, a pledge of $37 will secure one unit, while the planned retail price stands at $74. You can see the device in action in the accompanying video.
