A Portable Camping Torch Replaces the Traditional Campfire with a Blazing Inferno

Tripod torches, now common among battery-powered camping lights, are being reimagined by a new US startup with a more literal, albeit somewhat daunting, approach. Their Tripod Torch isn’t just a camping light—it’s a freestanding device that emits a real flame, designed to spread warmth in a circular pattern reminiscent of a campfire.

Unlike typical portable fire pits that often have enclosures, this one features a tall, exposed burner that ignites propane, allowing the flame to freely distribute heat in every direction.

It promises to enhance the camping experience significantly, assuming one navigates around potential fire hazards. At this year’s Overland Expo West, several high-powered LPG fire pits were showcased, but none captured attention quite like the Tripod Torch.

Enhanced Warmth and Comfort with the Tripod Torch

Despite its questionable safety with a 17-inch-high free-flaming design, the Tripod Torch prioritizes superior 360-degree warmth compared to traditional fire pits buried low in a bowl or ammo can.

Instead of needing to huddle directly over the fire for minimal warmth, campers can relax in their quad-folding chairs and enjoy the heat radiating towards them. The Tripod Torch has aptly termed this feature “Heat to Your Seat.”

Compliance with Fire Bans

The Tripod Torch, along with other LPG campfire options, offers a solution for maintaining a fire even during wood-burning restrictions and bans. According to Tripod Torch, it complies with most Stage 1 and 2 fire restrictions, although it’s crucial to verify with the relevant land management authority before camping.

We were curious about how this aligns with US National Forest Service fire regulations, and indeed, the Tripod Torch appears to meet the criteria for exemptions during stages 1 and 2 fire bans because it operates on LPG and includes an on/off switch.

To enhance safety and reduce the risk of the torch tipping over and causing a wildfire or injury, Tripod Torch includes three stakes to secure each leg for added stability.

While this doesn’t eliminate the possibility of someone accidentally stumbling into the open flame, similar risks exist with tall wood fires in fire rings. Careful attention and responsible adult supervision are essential in either scenario.

Compact Design and Easy Assembly of the Tripod Torch

After the camping trip, the Tripod Torch can be disassembled into components that fit neatly into a nearly-flat case measuring 10 x 8 x 3 inches (25 x 20 x 8 cm), with a total weight of 6 lbs (2.7 kg) including the case, components, and heat shields.

Setting up the torch is a quick process, with assembly typically taking only a few minutes. The legs feature an integrated wrench for securely attaching the regulator hose to the burner.

Three heat shields surround the burner to deflect wind and redirect the flame’s heat. These shields are versatile, capable of being used individually or together, and collectively they form a stable base for cooking pots. Although the vertical flame may not be optimal for all campfire cooking methods, roasting marshmallows on a stick is made simpler than ever.

Propane Compatibility and Burn Time Estimates for the Tripod Torch

The Tripod Torch is compatible with propane tanks ranging from 3 to 40 lbs in size. According to the company, using a standard 20-lb tank set to a medium flame provides approximately 10 hours of burn time, equating to roughly 2 lbs of propane per hour. Consumption rates vary from about 1 lb per hour on low settings to over 5 lbs per hour on high settings.

The torch itself and the canvas carry bag are both manufactured in the USA, and Tripod offers a lifetime guarantee on its components, with the exception of the regulator hose, which has a 90-day coverage.

This is the ideal moment for a portable LPG fire pit, particularly in the US. Recently, several of my preferred camping spots have implemented fire restrictions, prohibiting wood campfires in remote areas. A portable LPG unit offers a practical solution to comply with these restrictions, ensuring safety while still allowing campers to enjoy a fire at their campsite.
