With the launch of the Pixel 10 series, Google is moving quickly to outpace Apple in bringing AI-driven smartphones to market. Unveiled at Wednesday’s Made by Google event, the new devices arrive just ahead of Apple’s anticipated iPhone 17 announcement, which is expected to focus on familiar upgrades—like improved cameras, slimmer designs, and new color options.
Google Deepens AI Integration in Pixel Devices with Voice-First Gemini Features
In contrast, Google has been aggressively embedding its AI technology into its hardware. The Pixel 9 series introduced features such as Gemini Live (voice interactions), image generation, call summaries, and searchable screenshots. Google now reports that users engage in voice-based Gemini Live chats five times longer than they do with text.

This year, Google is introducing even more AI-driven features with the Pixel 10, including Visual Overlays for the camera, a proactive “Magic Cue,” Camera Coach, real-time Voice Translate for calls, a “Take a Message” assistant, Pixel Journal, and more.
Google Showcases On-Device AI Power with Tensor G5 and Gemini Nano Integration
These additions highlight the capabilities of Google’s latest AI advancements, now powered by the upgraded Tensor G5 chip—its first to support the new Gemini Nano model, optimized for on-device AI.
Google also revealed that Gemini Live will soon feature an advanced audio model able to detect your tone—such as excitement or concern—and tailor its responses accordingly.

Thanks to a new feature called Visual Overlays, Gemini Live can now view your surroundings through your camera and offer real-time guidance by highlighting elements on your screen. For instance, while exploring a foreign country, you could point your phone at street signs to check if they include parking information.

Magic Cue, a new feature, enables the AI to proactively offer real-time, context-aware suggestions across apps like Gmail, Calendar, Messages, and Screenshots.
However, this concept of proactive assistance has been part of Google’s vision for years. Back in the early 2010s, the company launched Google Now on Android, which displayed timely cards with info like lunch spots, meetings, or flight updates based on your schedule.
Now, Magic Cue revives that idea—this time powered by AI—by seamlessly integrating helpful prompts into your daily apps and interactions.

Google showcased how Magic Cue can recommend a restaurant for a meetup with a friend, offering one-tap access to call and book a table. It might also suggest a response with reservation details or prompt you to check your availability in your calendar.
Context-Aware Suggestions with Rainbow Highlights Now Appear In-App and in Daily Hub for Seamless Interaction
These suggestions appear directly within the app you’re using, highlighted by a rainbow-colored border for easy recognition, and also show up in Daily Hub—a personalized summary in your Discover feed. Each suggestion is interactive, allowing you to act on it with a simple tap.

The feature supports real-time translation between English and languages like Spanish, German, Japanese, French, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, and Indonesian.
Pixel’s New ‘Take a Message’ Tool Uses AI to Transcribe Calls and Suggest Next Steps
In the Pixel Phone app, a new tool called Take a Message offers live transcripts of missed or declined calls, using AI to determine suggested next steps based on the voicemail. This functionality will also be added to the Call Notes feature.

Pixel Journal Brings AI-Powered Goal Tracking and Personal Reflections to Compete with Apple’s Journal App
In fact, pixel Journal is Google’s AI-powered alternative to Apple’s Journal app, designed to encourage reflection, help track your goals, and provide personalized insights over time.

Additional AI enhancements in the Pixel 10 series include new writing tools built into the Gboard keyboard, improved screenshot features via Pixel Studio, and Notebook LM integration with both the Recorder app and screenshots.
