Powerful Solar Flare Bursts From Sun

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of a solar flare – as seen in the bright flash on the left picture– on Jan. 5, 2023. The image shows a subset of extreme ultraviolet light that highlights the extremely hot material in flares and which is colorized in AIA 171 orange. Credit: NASA/SDO

The sun released a powerful solar flare, peaking at 7:57 p.m. EDT on Jan. 5, 2023. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which observes the Sun frequently, recorded a photo of the happening.

Solar flares are powerful explosions of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can affect radio communications, electrical power grids, navigation signs and cause dangers to spacecraft and astronauts.

This flare is categorized as an X1.2 flare. X-class represents the most intense flares, while the number presents more data regarding its potency.
